Relation Between Gastric Banding Surgery & Weight Loss Surgery

Gastric banding surgery or gastric lap band surgery is specifically designed to limit the amount of food you intake during a day. It is one of the simplest types of weight loss surgery which can be easily adjusted or even reversed in its form. Basically this surgery is performed in a way that a small pouch is being created in the upper part of the stomach simply by wrapping a band around the stomach thus leaving a narrow passage from the newly created pouch and lower portion of the stomach. The band which is wrapped around the stomach keeps the normal performance of the digestion and food absorption.

In this type of surgery stomach is not being cut nor stapled or opened in any way so there is less chance of infection and it is also possible to reverse if such needs arise. A type of gastric band is connected by a way of tube to a reservoir which is being placed inside the skin of the upper abdomen. Band which is placed inside is inflatable in nature and controls the flow of food with the rest of the digestive tract. Patient will always feels as if they are full thus reducing the urge to eat between the normal meals.

The operation is usually done using a keyhole which is a kind of laparoscopic surgery and about five small cuts mainly of one or two centimeters long are done on the abdomen and the chest part. Through this cuts a tube like telescopic camera is inserted to view the area and the band is being fitted through specially designed instrument.

After the surgery doctor will take an x- ray in order to check the gastric band is being placed in the correct position by way of asking to swallow fluid which can show results in the x ray as where the food is going through in the stomach.

In some cases number of side effects is also possible with this of surgery as the stomach can slip under the band causing the pouch to be emptied fully and types of scar tissue can also build up around the band thus reducing to outlet space. In some of the cases it is also found that the band can loosen and failing in performing its part such as restricting the food.
