Stomach ulcer commonly known as peptic ulcer is a type of small erosion that can be found in gastrointestinal tract. Out of the whole common type of erosion known as duodenal that normally occurs in the first 12 inches of small intestine. Ulcers that are formed in stomach are called as gastric ulcers they are normally not contagious or cancerous. Duodenal ulcers are not very dangerous and are steady in nature but a stomach ulcer forms a very rapid growth.

The size of the stomach ulcer is found to be 1/8 of an inch to ¾ of an inch and is common in mastocytosis. The point to be noted here is that the bleeding which is the result of stomach ulcer may cause iron deficiency popularly known as anemia in individuals. The cause behind the peptic ulcer is the destruction of the gastric or intestinal mucosal lining of the stomach by hydrochloric acid which is normally present in the digestive juices of the stomach area. Whereas the important role which affects both the gastric and duodenal ulcer are largely attributed to the fact of the infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. Normally this is a transmitted disease effecting person to person by the way of contaminated food and water.

Injury caused in the gastric mucosal lining and may be the weakness of the mucous defenses is also responsible for the type of gastric ulcers. The factors which help in the worsening of duodenal ulcers are mainly excess secretion of hydrochloric acid, genetic predisposition and psychological stress. Habit of smoking and consumption of inflammatory medications such as aspirin plays a major role in causing ulcers in the body.

Symptom of having ulcer in the stomach is contributed with the feeling of burning or gnawing that lasts for a period of 30 minutes to 3 hours and this pain is often interpreted as heartburn, indigestion or hunger mainly occurs in the upper abdomen and sometimes below the breastbone.

Stomach ulcer mainly affects the nerves surrounding the area of stomach as the nerves become agitated and having great amount of pain. It can also cause hemorrhages a tear in the wall of stomach or intestine
